New Zealand's top ten driver frustrations revealed

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 27, 2011 – Inconsiderate drivers who don't give the road their full attention are New Zealand's biggest driver frustration, the latest AA Insurance survey has found. Last year's most frustrating driver behaviour – driving while using a mobile phone – fell 23 places from number one in the 2011 AA Insurance Driver Frustration Index, which polled 3,550 New Zealanders aged 18-65 to gain a better understanding of what causes drivers to become frustrated and take unnecessary risks.

"This is a significant result," said AA Insurance Head of Operations, Martin Fox. "In 2009, there was a lot of public attention about the ban on using mobile phones while driving. This may have been the reason survey respondents cited non-compliance with the ban as the most frustrating driver behaviour last year. Although drivers who text and talk on the phone no longer rank highly in the survey, our claims experience confirms it is still happening. Using a mobile phone while driving, takes the driver's attention away from the road, increasing the risk of an accident."

Martin continued, "Frustrated drivers have more accidents and claim more often, so it's important to understand the habits and behaviours that lead to hazardous driving. Motorists who fail to give the road their full attention not only put themselves at risk, but also other road users such as pedestrians and cyclists".

The second most common frustration was drivers who aren't courteous while changing lanes or merging. This particular behaviour jumped five places from seventh in last year's Driver Frustration Index.

Drivers who don't indicate, or continue to indicate after they need to, were ranked as the third most frustrating behaviour. City drivers ranked this as their top frustration, compared to rural drivers who ranked it seventh. Drivers who don't dip their lights at night for oncoming traffic placed fourth overall. Auckland city drivers were the only drivers to rate motorists who park near an intersection as a top ten frustration.

"Car claims for accidents caused by driver frustration and inattention can easily be avoided. We ask that drivers give the road their full attention and try to anticipate and respond to any changes in driving conditions," Martin concluded.

According to Tony Molla, the organization's vice president of communications, most air conditioning systems can function properly for well over 100,000 miles without needing a serious overhaul. But that's only true so long as a qualified service individual makes sure everything is running smoothly. That's where we come in!

"It's more like a health check to make sure [the air conditioning] is not just cooling, but that it's cooling properly," Molla said.

That means running a few quick checks. Molla is a certified ASE tech himself, and he says that an air conditioning exam starts by simply measuring the temperature of the air coming from the vehicle's vents. Mechanics use specially calibrated thermometers designed just for this task and check the results against the operating parameters for your vehicle.

Technicians also look for any leaks that may lead to the slow degradation of your system's performance, and they 2011 Chrysler 200 Convertible check the condition of the belt that runs the air conditioning compressor.

If everything is operating properly and no visual problems are spotted, the climate control is given a clean bill of health. "For example, there's a problem that happens in very humid areas of the country where mold will form inside the vents," Molla says. "Normal maintenance will pick that problem up before it becomes a bigger issue."

According to Molla, catching mold early is an easy fix that simply involves using a special spray in the ductwork. Left unchecked, however, the issue could require costly replacement.

Stay safe this summer with important tyre checks

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 15, 2011 – TyreSafe is urging motorists to inspect their tyres before heading off on holiday to avoid it becoming a tyre related 'wash out'.

On their pre-holiday check list, drivers should include making sure that their tyres have adequate tread depth, ensuring their tyres are properly inflated for the load being carried (including the spare tyre) and making sure that the general condition of the tyres is good. Driver's failing to make these checks are more likely to be involved in a tyre related incident, potentially ruining their summer break warns TyreSafe.

"Whether you're heading overseas in your car, or staying in the UK, correct tyre maintenance is vital to reduce the risk of being stranded by the roadside or involved in an accident as a result of a tyre related issue," says Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe. "Thankfully though, important pre-travel checks which can prevent such problems are simple to do and only take a few minutes to perform."

As well as the reduced likelihood of being involved in an accident, other benefits for drivers of correct tyre care include longer tyre life and reduced fuel bills. When tyres are goverment technology underinflated their rolling resistance increases meaning more fuel is required to drive the car. One TyreSafe member estimates that when tyres are under-inflated by just 6psi, or around 20 percent, fuel bills rise by 3 percent.

Furthermore, under-inflated tyres cause additional unnecessary expense for drivers as they wear out much quicker and need replacing sooner. When run at 80 percent of the recommend pressure, it is estimated that tyre life falls to around 75 percent. At 60 percent pressure, tyre life falls to just 35 percent.

When checking tyre pressures, drivers should ensure they are inflated to the correct levels for the load being carried. Many vehicles require higher tyre pressures when carrying extra passengers or heavy items such as suitcases, bikes or roof boxes. Details of correct tyre pressures can be found either in the driver's handbook, inside the fuel filler cap, or on a plate located on the driver's door sill. Alternatively, iPhone users can download the free TyreSafe app which gives drivers the correct tyre pressure settings for their vehicle. Equally important as tyre pressure is tread depth. But as Jackson explains, TyreSafe has devised a simple way for drivers to determine if their tyres have enough tread.

"The British weather is renowned for its unpredictable nature, so tyres need adequate tread depth to be able to cope with wet roads in the event of a sudden downpour. NAFA Elevates Fleet Safety To The Forefront Of The Industry
